This bird was initially considered unusual based on a mistaken understanding of Rock/Purple Sandpiper underside pattern.
This pattern is now understood to be consistent with Rock Sandpiper, the expected bird in the area.
However, while observing and photographing it, we were drawn to the purple sheen on some feathers.
I've left the photos up for that reason.
